Thomas Stjernholm, 94, a respected and beloved physician of the Pueblo community and the patriarch of his family, died peacefully in his sleep March 29 after a short illness. The son of Danish immigrants and the third oldest of nine children, he lived his early years on a farm in Fowler, Colorado. He graduated from Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S. Dakota and from the University of Colorado Medical School in 1944. He practiced Internal Medicine in Pueblo for 44 years before he retired in 1987 at the age of 69. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 55 years, Mary Beth (Hoffmeister) Stjernholm. With the exception of two tours of duty in the US Navy in WWII and the Korean Conflict, he lived his life in Colorado, raising his family of seven children, practicing medicine, and living a life of service and honor. During his working years, he enjoyed several outside interests, but his favorite was golf and he was most proud of his two holes-in-one. After retirement, he created many pieces of furniture, stained glass and needlepoint for his family. Thomas Stjernholm was a rock to his family, to his community and to his church. His life was a shining example of steadfast faith, hard work, and helping others. He is survived by his sister, Stina and his seven children who will always be blessed by his legacy: Marcia (Bill), Chris (Judy), Jim (Ronda), Bert (Marlene), John (Roch), Paul (Julie), and Bob (Kari). His 17 grandchildren will always remember his quick wit and steadfast encouragement, and his 16 great-grandchildren will continue to hear the many stories of his life. A service celebrating of his life will be held on Wednesday, April 4th at 2pm at King of Kings Lutheran Church, where his family was a charter member. Memorial gifts may be made to King of Kings.
