James N. “Newt” Phelps passed away May 14, 2012 in Pueblo, Colorado where he had lived for all 82 years on earth. Jimmy was born February 19, 1930 in Pueblo to Lawrence and Jeanette Phelps. He was a veteran of the Armed Services having served during the Korean War. Jimmy was employed at the Pueblo Army Depot for 30 years before his retirement in 1978. He was also the owner and operator of Jim’s Rod and Reel Repair Shop. Newt never met a stranger. His love for people will surely be missed. His love for family, and the family’s love for him will forever live in all of us. Jimmy was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Claudine “Butch” Phelps, daughter Joyce “Dodo Bird” Easley, his parents and 4 older brothers; Burton, Albert, Louis and Bobby and many near and dear old friends. His survivors include his son Ray (Marsha) Phelps; grandchildren, Chris (Michelle) Phelps, Isaac Phelps, Claudia Griffith, James (Carla) Griffith, Danille (Mark) Brickman and Leroy (Yvonne) Easley; numerous great grandchildren; several great great grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, old and new friends. Special thanks to the nursing staff at Parkview 4 South and to Dr. Harry Keefe for their compassionate care for Dad. At his request, cremation. The family will greet friends on Saturday, May 19, 2012 from 11 am until 2pm at Blue Ribbon Event Center, 5206 Thatcher Avenue.
