Charles “Charlie” W. Terrill, 90, Fire Chief Rye Fire Protection District (Retired) passed away quietly at home October 21, 2014, Born March 14, 1924 in Arcadia, Kansas. He was fondly known by Greenhorn Valley residents as “Charlie”. Charles was preceded in death, by his loving wife Lorraine, in 2010, married for 68 years. He is survived by brother Glen, sons; Mike (Debbie) Terrill , Pat (Nadeen) Terrill , Terry (Sue) Terrill , and Clancy (Phyllis) Terrill, 10 Grandchildren and 21 Great Grandchildren. Charles and Lorraine moved to Rye from Fort Scott Kansas in 1948 and remained Rye residents. Charles worked at The CF&I for 38 years as a foreman until retiring in 1986. Charles worked as a deputy sheriff in the Greenhorn Valley from 1952 thru 1974. He organized an official fire department, the Rye Fire Protection District. Charlie became the first Fire Chief in 1954 until he retired in January 2003. In the 51 years up to his retirement, the department grew from a few volunteers to a full time fire department with 2 stations. He was recognized by various awards for his public service. He received recognition by former President Bill Clinton for his public service and dedication. Charlie was an avid hunter and fisherman. He spent many hours, with his four sons and grandchildren, enjoying those activities. He spent his final retirement days enjoying fishing with his numerous fishing buddies, and mostly his grandson, Travis. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Mary and Jaymie for the many hours and love given to Charlie in his last days. Also many thanks to the firefighters at Station I and Station II, Fire Chief Steve Bennet, John and Kathy from Max’s Place, good friends Jeanie, Cordell & Sheila Henderson, Gene Rahl, Dick Scrivner and many other numerous friends that gave so much of themselves to take time out of their busy schedules and visit Charlie. Funeral service is planned for Monday, October 27, 2015 at St Aloysius Catholic Church, Rye, Colorado at 10:00 a.m., with a reception following at the church. Please no flowers.
