Steven Speck

Steven Speck passed away into the arms of Jesus on July 18, 2024. He was born on July 1, 1946. As many stories of adopted children go, Steve’s birth records were closed. But he was much loved by his adopted family. He spent his growing up years in Ophiem Illinois, a mid-western farm town. The family moved to Grand Junction when he was 12.

He is preceded in death by his step-father Merle Samson, step-mother Betty Samson, a brother, Don, a sister-in-law, Raelene and his wife Liz.

Steve traveled to Denver in his early 20s. He found his passion for cooking at an early age. He worked at various restaurants throughout the metro area. His talents in serving food progressed to bartending in Las Vegas, Nevada. After a few years he moved back to Denver. It was in Denver that he received training from a diesel mechanics school. His gregarious personality made him a great truck driver. He loved talking to truck drivers along the road on his CB radio. They all shared stories and laughter along the transport route. His final job before retirement was in Pueblo at the Pueblo City Diner.

It was at the City Diner in Pueblo, Steve met a young man named Rocky who was working at a local café. They instantly hit it off. After getting to know Steve, Rocky introduced him to his mother, Lynn. She quickly became the love of his life with her sweet personality and caring disposition. She was at his side as his health diminished from a serious liver condition. He adored Lynn’s children, Rocky, Aaron and Amanda.

His passion was for anything technical. He loved computers programs, vehicle repair, flying drones in the park with Rocky, fishing and wood-burning. He tediously woodburned decorative clocks worthy of sale at a local garden center.

Jimmy Herod was a very close friend throughout his lifetime. Jimmy saved Steve from a group of men that were picking a fight with him over his red hair. Jimmy stepped in to save him from an ensuing fist fight of three against one! His red hair meant that he was not backing down!

Steve was a very good dancer. He loved dancing to James Brown soul music in a very unusual manner that often-turned heads. He did this thing called the “freeze”. His whole body just stood in one place and shook to the music. The entertainer!

Most days, he would step right up to be the life of the party with a gleam in his eye that meant you were in for some serious teasing.

He is survived by a daughter, Michelle, a son, Sean, three step-brothers, Fred, Harry and Steve Samson and a step- sister Peggy Sharpe that cherished her time traveling to Pueblo for tours of the city he loved so much!

We will all miss him deeply..
